Leaning Post - 2020 Piquette
Piquette is the original drink of grape-farmers and workers in France and across much of the grape-growing areas of Europe. While not technically wine, it is an amazing, recycled product. Typically, after pressing for our regular wines we would have discarded the grape skins however this year we found a way to reuse them. We soaked the leftover grape-skins in water and after a few days, we fermented the mixture on skins. Before fermentation was complete, we pressed the skins again, let it settle briefly and then bottled so that we trapped a light spritz in bottle.
The grapes we used gave us a wonderful light-pink colour and a bright, fruity nose. The nose has vibrant cranberry, sour cherry, and raspberry, layered over funky, yeasty aromas. On the palate, cranberry meets watermelon and honeysuckle with an amazing bread-like middle and extremely refreshing, bright acid on the finish. It is pink, cloudy, super-refreshing and uber-delicious! Think of this as baby-Pet-Nat meets heritage-cider meets hard-seltzer! Weighing in at only 5.5% alcohol, it is perfect served ice-cold at the pool, or at a picnic on a warm summer day with good company!
